Every butterfly has  "host plant" that they lay their eggs on.  The eggs hatch on that plant and the tiny caterpillars eat the leaves until they reach the right size to form their chrysalis.  A good butterfly garden has Host plants and pollinator plants for the full life cycle of the butterfly.
